The Shows

act 1 musical: Annie Jr.

Based on the popular comic strip, Annie Jr. tells of a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan's evil machinations, befriends President Franklin Roosevelt and finds a new family. Its upbeat plot and flamboyant characters have made Annie one of the most beloved musicals in history, with songs like "Easy Street," "Hard Knock Life," and "Tomorrow" that will send the whole family off singing.

act 2 musical: Guys and Dolls

directed by Christopher Webb
An incongruous romance between an inveterate gambler named Sky Masterson and a Salvation Army-type missionary girl, headquartered in the theater district. Sky, who can't refuse a wager of any kind, is bet by another gambler, Nathan Detroit, that he can't romance the straitlaced missionary, Sarah Brown. Meanwhile, Nathan has troubles of his own, trying to set up a floating crap game while avoiding the wrath of his fiancée, a brassy chorus girl named Miss Adelaide, who is desperate to marry Nathan after a 14-year engagement. Featuring songs like "Luck Be A Lady" and "Adelaide's Lament."

act 2 musical: Wonderful Town
In this classic 1950s musical, recently revived on Broadway, Betty Comden and Adolph Green's lyrics are paired with Leonard Bernstein's music to produce some of the most popular songs of the 1950s. Wonderful Town is about the adventures and misadventures of two sisters who move from their comfortable hometown in Ohio to Greenwich Village to fulfill their dreams. Their comic misadventures span the entire city as the audience enjoys classic tunes like "The Wrong Note Rag" and of course, "Ohio."

act 3 musical: Company

directed by Caitlin Lowans, Director of Education
This Sondheim masterpiece centers on a 30-something bachelor named Robert, the hub of activity for the five married couples who spiral around him. The context of the show is mod Manhattan in the 1970s, utterly unromantic, a city of strangers. The upper-middle class problems that the audience came to a musical to avoid are suddenly facing them on the stage. This modern musical theatre classic features some of Sondheim's most memorable songs: "Another Hundred People," "Ladies Who Lunch," and "Being Alive."

act 3 musical: 42nd Street

directed and choreographed by Chris Carcione
The show itself is a jazzy, noisy paean to the transcendent joys of Broadway. The Great White Way's most brilliant director, Julian Marsh, is preparing his biggest show yet, "Pretty Lady," in the depths of the Great Depression. He is faced with one obstacle after another, especially when his leading lady breaks her ankle at the last minute; of course, young chorine Peggy Sawyer is pushed unexpectedly center stage and becomes a surprise star on opening night. A toe-tapping backstage valentine to Broadway, major songs include "We're in the Money, "Lullaby of Broadway" and "Shuffle Off to Buffalo."

act 3 play: The Philadelphia Story

directed by Weylin Symes, Producing Artistic Director
A romantic screwball comedy about a bride-to-be whose plans are complicated by the simultaneous arrival of her ex-husband and a handsome journalist. This Broadway hit starred Katharine Hepburn as Tracy Lord of the Philadelphia Lords, an inhibited and spoiled daughter of the privileged. Divorced from C.J. Dexter Haven, she is engaged to a successful young snob. A gossip weekly sends a reporter and a camera woman to report the wedding arrangements and they are injected into the house by Tracy's brother who hopes to divert their attention from father's romance with a Broadway dancer. Hijinks ensue!

The Workshops

During the summer program, students work under the guidance of professional theatre artists. In addition to learning from the directors, music directors and choreographers for their shows, students also take workshops in various theatre disciplines to further develop as artists. Over the course of the program, students take 4 workshops, each culminating in an informal sharing with family and friends.

After enrolling, students have the opportunity to indicate their preferences and previous experiences, and then are placed into workshops that will provide them with a balance of acting, singing and dance.

Potential Dance Workshops: Tap, Fosse, Modern, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin, Ballroom
Potential Acting Workshops: Suzuki, Improv, Linklater, Shakespeare, Scene Study
Other Potential Workshops: Voice (Intro and Advanced), Songwriting, Musical Theatre Audition, Pilates, Stage Combat

The summer program is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollment begins March 1st. Program fees: $850.

The Overture Program

Overture is one of our newer programs designed especially for students entering grades 1 - 3. Overture students have the opportunity to participate in up to five week-long workshops from July 14th - August 15th. Each workshop culminates in a public performance for friends, family and the members of act 1 and act 2. Each of the five workshops will introduce students to performing arts skills in a safe and creative environment. The weeks are designed to support each other, but not repeat subject matter or material; a student who only attends one week will not feel out of place, but a student who attends all five weeks will work on a variety of skills.
